Is a Botswana safari expensive?
Generally, yes, relative to neighbouring countries — the deliberate low-volume tourism model keeps camp numbers capped and prices high. Mobile camping and self-drive options in Chobe and the Kalahari bring costs down significantly compared with fly-in Delta luxury camps.
Can I see the Big Five in Botswana?
Lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo are all readily seen across the northern circuit. Rhino is the exception — populations were decimated by poaching and are recovering through reintroduction programmes, mainly around the Okavango Delta and Khama Rhino Sanctuary, so sightings are possible but not guaranteed.

Packing Checklist

Chobe River Boat Cruise
No safari activity in Botswana delivers wildlife as reliably, or from as unusual a vantage point, as a boat cruise on the Chobe River. The river forms the natural border between Botswana and Namibia along the northern edge of Chobe National Park, and its permanent water draws one of the densest concentrations of elephants left on Earth, alongside hippo, crocodile, buffalo, and more than 400 recorded bird species. Where a game drive puts you at eye level with the bush, a cruise puts you at eye level with the water — close enough to watch elephants swim between islands, hippos surface a few metres from the boat, and fish eagles dive for their catch overhead.
Because sightings depend on animals coming to drink rather than a vehicle finding them, a Chobe River cruise is also one of the most consistent wildlife activities in the region — many visitors rate it as the single best safari experience of their entire Botswana trip, on par with or ahead of any game drive.
Types Of Boat Cruise In Chobe River
Sunset (Afternoon) Cruise — the classic choice
The most popular option by far: a roughly three-hour cruise departing mid-afternoon and running through sunset, when cooling temperatures send large herds of elephant, buffalo, zebra, and impala down to the water for their evening drink. Most operators include hotel pickup, a guide providing wildlife commentary, and a drink (often a gin and tonic or local beer) as the sun goes down over the river.
Morning Cruise
A quieter alternative departing shortly after sunrise, when animals return to the water after a night in the bush and the light is soft for photography. Morning cruises tend to have fewer boats on the water and are a strong choice for serious photographers or anyone wanting to avoid the more heavily booked sunset slot.
